Swap out some of the sweet spuds for carrots, and get an added boost of beta-carotene and carotenoids. (Official White House Photo by Chuck Kennedy) Since launching Let’s Move! on February 9, 2010, significant progress has been made to solve the problem of childhood obesity. Parents, businesses, educators, elected officials, members of the military, chefs, physicians, athletes, childcare providers, community and faith leaders and kids themselves have made substantial commitments to improve the health of our nation’s children. Through working together with Let’s Move!, these groups have provided children with healthier food and greater opportunities for physical activity in schools and communities, helped get families the information they need to make healthier decisions, supported a healthy start in early childhood, and have worked to ensure more people have access to healthy, affordable food.

Brionna Williams of Kansas City understands the nation’s childhood obesity problem. She lived it.  As a middle school student, Brionna tipped the scales at more than 350 pounds. She longed to play sports, but running the length of a basketball court left her gasping for breath.

With the winter holidays right around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning healthy, active, and fun holiday celebrations. Let’s Move!Child Care (LMCC) is encouraging providers to change the way they think about how food is offered and emphasized in child care settings. Many cultures—including mainstream American—celebrate with food, and eating together can foster social bonds. Healthy food should be celebrated! In fact, with a little creativity, your next holiday party can incorporate the same healthy principles that you follow the other times of the year.

Across the country, chefs and schools are teaming up to teach kids how to get more from their food and make healthy choices. The Chefs Move to Schools initiative encourages chefs to partner with schools to support the creation of healthy, affordable meals and educate children on healthy cooking and eating that’s also delicious!

Recipe courtesy of USDA's Choose My Plate Use this recipe as a motivaitonal tool to help put a healthy and affordable eating pattern into pratice, and to identify creative new ideas for healthy meals. 2 slices rye bread 2 ounces tuna 1 Tbsp mayonnaise 1 Tbsp chopped celery ½ cup shredded lettuce 1. Combine tuna, mayonnaise and celery in a small bowl. Add spices to taste.
