Yesterday, First Lady Michelle Obama presented the 2014 National Medal for Museum and Library Service at a special ceremony in the White House. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for community service and celebrates how they make a difference for individuals, families, and communities.

As the school year begins to wind down, let’s take time to acknowledge the unsung heroes in our nation’s school cafeterias. School nutrition employees contribute greatly to a child’s short- and long-term health and academic success, but their contributions often go without recognition. Today is School Lunch Hero Day, and next week (May 5-9) is School Nutrition Employee Week. Let’s take this opportunity to extend our thanks for all that school nutrition employees do to support our children throughout the entire school year.

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month: a great time to renew your commitment to a healthy, active lifestyle. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report: Strategies to Increase Physical Activities Among Youth, youth need 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day where they live, learn, and play. In addition to physical health benefits, regular activity provides cognitive health benefits as well. Research shows that when children are physically active, they achieve higher grades, record better attendance, and their behavior improves. Put simply, active kids do better.

This weekend, the White House will open its gardens and grounds to visitors to see the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, the Rose Garden, and our favorite, the White House Kitchen Garden. Just three weeks ago, the First Lady, along with local DC students and FoodCorps leaders, planted the sixth annual White House Kitchen Garden. Also, new this year, the First Lady planted the first ever White House Pollinator Garden to support bees, monarch butterflies, and other pollinators.

The National Parks provide a great opportunity to get outside and be active while having fun discovering new places! It was a beautiful day on the South Lawn yesterday as over 30,000 people visited for the 136th annual White House Easter Egg Roll. This year’s theme was “Hop into Healthy, Swing into Shape,” and many of the day’s activities were in support of Let’s Move!, providing kids and families with opportunities for fun physical activity and helpful tips on eating healthy.
