As a parent, do mealtimes feel like a battle between you and your children? I hear many parents talking about how their child is a picky eater, and they have a hard time introducing new foods. And how hard can it be to get them out the door and away from the TV? What would it be like if they actually liked trying new foods and being active?

With Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack in tow, First Lady Michelle Obama traveled to Philadelphia yesterday as part of the Let's Move! campaign, a nationwide effort to rally the country around one goal, ending the epidemic of childhood obesity.

Today marks an exciting milestone in the fight against the obesity epidemic. The newly created Partnership for a Healthier America is dedicated to the addressing America's obesity epidemic. Raising a healthier generation of children will require engaging in sustained and significant dialogue with States, communities, and the non-profit and private sectors. To support this effort, several foundations are helping to organize and fund a new foundation.

This week, I was proud to join the First Lady and my colleagues across government for the announcement of her new initiative to combat childhood obesity: Let's Move! As a mother, I am struck by the fact that 1 in 3 children are overweight or obese and understand the desire to see our kids healthy while they are young, and as they grow into adulthood.

A call to action, a challenge for a generation, no matter what we call it, First Lady Michelle Obama's announcement of the Let's Move initiative is an ambitious goal of solving the challenge of childhood obesity. It is a goal that we take seriously here at USDA and we are prepared to dedicate our time, energy, and resources to achieving this goal.

I am so pleased by the response from the education community to the First Lady's call - "Let's Move." Since the launch of this national initiative to fight childhood obesity, education groups are rallying around this national initiative to fight childhood obesity. They recognize that children learn and develop in school so many of the habits that will be with them for a lifetime.
