Special Delivery for Elementary Students

This past March, students from Kate Mitchell Elementary, Stetser Elementary, Sumner Elementary, and Girl Scout Troop 60325  joined First Lady Michelle Obama to plant the White House Garden's fourth season of produce. Just last week, students from Bancroft Elementary and Harriet Tubman Elementary joined Sam Kass, Assistant Chef and Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives, in the White House Garden to harvest some of that crop.

And on June 1, Kate Mitchell Elementary School, Stetser Elementary School, Sumner Elementary School, and Girl Scout Troop 60325 all received a special delivery from the White House. Each package contained several types of produce -- including broccoli, peas, onions, and two types of lettuce -- as well as a thank you note from the young harvesters, a chef's hat, and a recipe for broccoli soup.

After receiving the veggies, Janet Baldwin, the principal of Stetser Elementary School, wrote to say, "We feel so fortunate to have a First Lady who is devoting her time, talents, and energy to bring light to this crisis for all of our children but particularly those who do not have access to fresh foods. We are on a mission to fill the gap for our children and families here at Stetser and our experience with the First Lady has inspired us to continue to build on what we have already started."
