Plant A Garden: We're Planting Our Own Produce, Care to Join Us?

April showers bring May flowers. That’s how the old adage goes. But instead of waiting for the flowers to bloom, this May bring your family together with an activity that is perfect whether the sun is shining or it’s pouring down rain – we're talking about gardening of course! Families, schools and communities across the country can all take part in our newest initiative to get our children healthy. We’re growing our own produce and we want you to join us.

The White House Kitchen Garden is home to leafy greens, herbs and berries – all planted and harvested by First Lady Michelle Obama, White House staff, the National Park Service and the garden’s many visitors.

We've put together a new Let’s Move! gardening section that provides expert tips on everything from gardening when you’re tight on space to creating the best design for your garden, depending on the seeds you choose. Best of all, we’ve included handy checklists that specifically address the different needs of school, kitchen and community gardening with easy to follow steps (and printable pages) you can share with people you know and encourage them to garden too.

Growing your own fruits and vegetables is a great way to incorporate healthful foods into your diet, teach your kids about where their food comes from and spend time with people you care for. What are you waiting for? Check out the Let’s Move! Gardening Guide and plant a garden today!
