National Parks Service Looks Into Healthy Foods in America’s Parks
If you’ve been following the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative, you know that eating healthy and getting active go hand-in-hand. Thanks to the National Parks Service’s new Healthy Foods Strategy, it will be easier than ever to enjoy healthy foods and exercise at America’s beautiful national parks.
National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis announced a new plan to take a hard look at the food options available at parks across the country, and figure out where there’s room for improvement. Working with the Center for Disease Control, the Park Service is aiming to increase availability and reduce costs for healthy food options.
The national program is modeled after a pilot “Food for the Parks” program in place at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy. Visitors to Alcatraz, Muir Woods, and dozens of other parks along the Pacific Coast have been able to get local and sustainably grown foods at the cafes, restaurants, and concession stands in the parks. The success of the program will provide a guide for the National Park Service’s efforts around the country.
